Spring Skiing

Posted Sunday 12th February 2017

Its another wonderful winter in the Grand Massif. Chalet Setanta is fully booked for the next few weeks but we still have a couple of dates late in the season available. If you’ve not experienced spring skiing this should be the year for you.

With sun-filled days, blue skies and soft snow, spring skiing in the Grand Massif is an experience all of its own.

What To Expect

Soft snow makes for easier skiing. If you’re used to super manicured pistes adapt your style by carving your turns on gentle slopes with big angles so your skis slice through the soft snow and bumps, on steeper slopes use more pressure to shape the turn. Make sure your skis are well waxed so they glide through sticky snow.

If you feel the need for speed, stick to the shade where the snow is packed firm.

Warmer temperatures are the best part of spring skiing. Wear breathable layers and opt for jackets, salopettes and helmets with vents to help you keep cool as you soak up the sun.

Check your lenses. Regular goggles are designed for flat light but might not be so great when the sun is shining. If its warm enough you might be able to break out the sunglasses.

Don’t forget the sun cream! With every 1,000m increase in altitude UV levels rise 10 – 12%.

If winter skiing is all you’ve known, get ready to enjoy the mountain in a new way with spring skiing.
