A Brief Guide To Ski Holiday Essentials

Posted 9th January 2016

If you’re looking forward to your first family ski holiday in the Grand Massif, you’re in for a real treat.

Packing the right equipment is essential to ensuring you have the best possible experience. As a helping hand here are a few essentials to add to your ski holiday packing list.

Main Clothing

It might seem a little obvious to say, but ski resorts are always cold – freezing in fact! As well as warm jumpers and jacket don’t forget to bring a pair of gloves and hat for walking around Morillon village. Shoes or boots with a good grip are recommended for snowy pavements.

Ski Wear

The first morning of your holiday isn’t the best time to realise you don’t have the right kit. Your ski gear should keep you warm, dry and comfortable. Wear a non-cotton base layer next to your skin to wick moisture away from your body as you sweat to be comfortable whilst you’re moving and won’t make you cold when you stop or on the lift. Next you can either wear an insulated ski jacket or layer-up topped with a waterproof outer shell.

Gloves should be waterproof and well insulated. Mittens will keep you warmer on days when temperatures plummet, fingered gloves give you more dexterity.

Ski socks are a specialist item. Anyone heading to the mountain wearing just a pair of sports socks will soon realise their mistake.

Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended. Some have insulation to keep your head and ears warm but if not wear a light hat that comfortably fits underneath. Helmets are bulky items to pack and cheap to rent so don’t rush out and buy one.

Sunscreen

The high altitude offers less protection from the sun so risk of getting burnt is higher than on the beach. Reliable suntan lotion is essential. Ideally one that lasts all day so you don’t need to reapply on the slopes.

Don’t worry if you do forget to pack anything or decide to take advantage of the strong pound and replace any gear while you’re here, there are several good shops in Morillon and in-resort driver is included as part of your Setanta Chalet winter package.
